40th Celebration
40 Years of Purpose and Possibility
Dear Friends,
It is both an honor and a privilege to share in the story of Adult Enrichment Centers — a story that began as a dream in 1982 at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill, SC and has grown into a network of programs and services that touch hundreds of lives across York County every week. As I reflect on the decades of dedication, compassion, and vision that have shaped this organization, I am humbled by the countless individuals whose commitment has made our work possible.
From the earliest days, leaders like David Cowan, Ann Barton, Nancy Thomas, and Mrs. Alton G. Brown recognized a need in our community and believed that we could create a place where frail adults could receive not just care, but dignity, respect, and a sense of belonging. Their courage to pursue a concept that was largely unknown at the time laid the foundation for everything we do today. They understood, as we do now, that our work is about more than services — it is about relationships, trust, and the human spirit.
Over the years, we have expanded from a single home at 412 Park Avenue to multiple centers serving Rock Hill, York, Fort Mill, Tega Cay, and Indian Land. Along the way, we’ve embraced new ideas — the High Five Club, High Five Works, RENEW: Montessori for Aging and Memory, and the School of the Arts for neurodiverse adults — each program a testament to our commitment to meet the evolving needs of those we serve. Every expansion, every new initiative, and every innovation has been guided by the belief that every life is worthy of enrichment, engagement, and opportunity.
Our journey has not been without challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic tested every aspect of our operations, forcing difficult decisions and temporary closures. Yet even in the face of uncertainty, our staff, board, families, and community partners demonstrated resilience, creativity, and unwavering support. Together, we not only weathered the storm — we emerged stronger, more focused, and ready to embrace the next chapter in our mission.
As we celebrate our past and look to the future, my hope is that every person who walks through our doors, participates in our programs, or partners with our mission feels the care, respect, and joy that have been the heart of Adult Enrichment Centers for more than four decades. Our work is a shared journey — one built on compassion, community, and an unshakable belief in the potential of every individual.
Thank you for being a part of this story, for believing in the vision, and for supporting our ongoing mission to enrich lives, support families, and strengthen our community. The legacy of those early dreamers continues in every smile, every achievement, and every meaningful connection made within our centers. Together, we will continue to build a future where every life is honored, every voice is heard, and every person has the opportunity to thrive.
With gratitude and commitment,
Samantha Kriegshauser
